My surname is Hoover. The surname Hoover is the Anglicized (to make or become English in sound, appearance, or character) version of the German and Dutch name Huber. The name Hoover, which is from the german name Huber, or the German word "houber" and means "an owner of a large measure of land", or "a man who owns a hube (a 30-60 acre parcel of land)," from the Middle High German huober and Middle Dutch huve. The surname Huber was first found in Bavaria, Germany, where they became a prominent contributor to the development of the providence. The name Huber is always prominent in social affairs, and became an integral part of the region's affairs, as it emerged to form alliances with other families within the feudal system. From Wikipedia: Huber is a German-language surname. It derives from the German word Hube meaning hide, a unit of land a farmer might possess, granting them the status of a free tenant. It is in the top ten most common surnames in the German-speaking world, especially in Austria and Switzerland where it is the surname of approximately 0.3% of the population. Variants arising from varying dialectal pronunciation of the surname include Hueber, Hüber, Huemer, Humor, Haumer, Huebner and (anglicized) Hoover. I go to German Night at the german church in the city every year to celebrate my heritage.
